November Field Trip to Surrey City Hall

The Grade 3/4 class enjoyed the view from Mayor Dianne Watts' office balcony during their visit to the new Surrey City Hall.

We experienced how decisions are made at the municipal government level in a mock council meeting in the council chambers.

Our new incoming Mayor!

Students enjoyed sitting in the councilors' and mayor's comfortable chairs.

A future Mayor?

Elections

After participating in the BCA Student Council elections, the Grade 3/4's continued to study the election process by having a couple of elections of our own. First, we used materials provided by Elections Canada to elect a class mascot - Neevee the Caribou. Her motto was "for a kind and considerate class, vote for Neevee".
Next we held an
election for class president.  Three candidates were nominated:  Isabelle, Joy and Thomas.    The candidates prepared speeches and campaign posters.  The class discussed characteristics of a good leader  (communication and organizational skills, etc.). Then the election was held using a secret ballot. The winner was... Thomas Rae!  Congratulations!

Buddy Reading time with the Grade 1/2's is always anticipated with eagerness! Grade 3/4 students enjoy mentoring the younger students and take their roles seriously while the younger students appreciate the one-on-one time spent with an older student.
